About the Book

This monograph explores the cognitive and communicative dimensions of conceptual representation in language, focusing on the verbalization of the concept CRIMINAL in contemporary English crime fiction and printed media discourse. Situated within the cognitive-communicative paradigm of modern linguistics, the study examines how linguistic units function simultaneously as instruments of cognition and communication, reflecting both objective reality and subjective human experience. The research is grounded in the premise that conceptualization is shaped by sociocultural context, professional experience, communicative intentions, and individual cognitive processes

The monograph introduces students to Conceptology as a branch of Cognitive Linguistics and demonstrates how conceptual analysis can be applied within the framework of the threefold aspect of language. Crime fiction and media texts are employed as authentic linguistic material for reconstructing mental categories and investigating the relationship between extra-linguistic phenomena and their linguistic manifestations. Particular attention is paid to the conceptual structure and frame-based organization of the concept CRIMINAL, as well as to the linguistic mechanisms involved in its verbalization.

The study further investigates communicative situations such as Investigation and Interrogation, analyzing the interaction of speech acts, social factors, and situational models that shape communication processes. Through the examination of frame networks and prototypical expressions, the monograph demonstrates how conceptual content is transmitted, interpreted, and negotiated in discourse. In addition, it addresses lexical, syntactic, stylistic, genre, and compositional features of crime-related texts, highlighting their role in achieving communicative goals and constructing conceptual meaning.

Designed as a supplementary resource for undergraduate and beginning graduate students, the book combines theoretical foundations with practical analytical tasks, including discourse analysis, translation activities, and lexical-semantic investigations. By integrating cognitive, communicative, and stylistic approaches, the monograph contributes to a deeper understanding of conceptual representation in language and offers methodological tools for the analysis of discourse across linguistic and interdisciplinary contexts. Its findings may be valuable for students, researchers, and practitioners in linguistics, media studies, communication, and related fields.
